Special Openings of Lecce’s Greek Church: A Journey Through History, Art and Byzantine Tradition

In June 2026, the Church of Saint Nicholas of Myra, widely known in Lecce as the Greek Church, will open its doors to the public for a series of special visits as part of the initiative “FAI… la Storia”.

The visits will take place on Thursday 4, 11, 18 and 25 June, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the church located at 15 Piazzetta Chiesa Greca, in the heart of Lecce’s historic centre.

The Church of Saint Nicholas of the Greeks is home to the Parish of Saint Nicholas of Myra, which belongs to the Eparchy of Lungro, and represents an important religious and cultural landmark for the Byzantine tradition. Byzantine-rite liturgies are still celebrated inside the church, making it a place of great spiritual, historical and artistic value.

Visitors will be welcomed and accompanied by Papas Nik and Linda Ngresi, who will introduce the history of the church, its artistic heritage and the distinctive features of the Byzantine liturgical tradition.

During the special openings, visitors will also have the opportunity to access the meeting room of MILOSAO – Popoli e Culture, where a selection of video stories dedicated to history, memory and cultural heritage will be screened.

The initiative is organised through the collaboration of the FAI Delegation of Lecce, the FAI Ponte tra Culture Group – Lecce Delegation, the Greek Church and MILOSAO – Popoli e Culture.

The openings will be suspended during July and August and will resume in September at the same time.

This is a special opportunity to discover one of the most fascinating and lesser-known places in Lecce’s historic centre and to experience the beauty of its art, faith and Byzantine tradition.
